As streaming services increasingly muscle in on traditional distributors’ turf, we’re seeing more from the likes if Netflix and Amazon. The former even ran a trailer for one of its original movies during the Oscars on Sunday night, so get your first proper look at David Ayer’s Bright, starring Will Smith, Joel Edgerton and Noomi Rapace. Max Landis’ original concept script blends fantasy mythology with End Of Watch-style cop action, as Smith and Edgerton are playing a human and an orc who must outrun the authorities, criminals and a variety of supernatural beings to protect a powerful magic wand. Lucy Fry is Tikka, a young elf with her own magical abilities who comes into possession of the wand and needs the leads’ help when dark forces try to hunt her down. From the first glimpse of the film, it’s certainly interesting, with a cast that also includes Edgar Ramirez and Ike Barinholtz. It’ll hit Netflix in December.

Filming is now underway on “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer’s next project “Bright”. The big-budget feature is being made exclusively for Netflix and has been described as essentially Ayer’s “End of Watch” cop drama, but with a fantasy twist as in this version of contemporary Los Angeles there’s also Orcs. In the film an Orc cop (Joel Edgerton) is partnered with a human cop (Will Smith) on an ordinary beat when they wind up helping an elf (Lucy Fry ) who has come into the possession of a massively powerful (and highly illegal) weapon: a magic wand. With several nefarious villains after the powerful artifact, the cops end up having to protect it and her. Noomi Rapace also stars in the film which Max Landis penned and which will debut on the streaming service in either late 2017 or 2018. Also, it was just released that Edgar Ramirez has joined the project as well. So far, Noomi hasn’t been spotted on the set.

According to Variety, Noomi Rapace is in negotiations to co-star with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton in Netflix’s “Bright.” David Ayer is directing the pic. Plot details are unknown, but sources say the project will be in the same vein of “End of Watch” (which was directed by Ayer), but set in a world where orcs and fairies live among humans. Sources also say the story is not set in present day. Written by Max Landis, the spec became one of the Hollywood’s hotter packages after WME and CAA took it to buyers when Warner Bros. was unable to make a deal for the rights. Most felt that a major studio would land the project, given the star power and what reps were asking upfront for P&A. Netflix, however, swooped in, committing a massive $90 million for the budget, spending $3 million to acquire the spec. Production is expected to start sometime this fall with Bryan Unkeless and Eric Newman producing. Let’s hope this is more successful than the last Smith/Rapace announced project, “Brilliance”, which never saw the light of day.
